Indoor air quality is an important part of healthy aging. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, where concentrations of some pollutants can be higher than outdoors. For many seniors—particularly those who are retired, have limited mobility, or receive care at home—the proportion of time spent indoors may be especially high.
Age also changes how the body responds to environmental stress. Lung function generally declines with age, cardiovascular reserve may decrease, immune responses change, and chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases become more common. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and EPA consequently identify older adults among populations that can be at greater risk from air pollution.
This combination—greater potential exposure and greater physiological vulnerability—makes indoor air quality particularly important for seniors.
Here are seven crucial indoor air quality factors and why each deserves special attention in homes and facilities occupied by older adults.
1. Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5): A Greater Burden on Aging Hearts and Lungs
Fine particulate matter, or PM2.5, consists of microscopic particles 2.5 micrometers in diameter or smaller. Indoor sources can include cooking, smoking, fireplaces, candles, and other combustion activities, while outdoor pollution and wildfire smoke can also infiltrate buildings.
PM2.5 is particularly concerning because these particles can penetrate deeply into the lungs, and some components can enter the bloodstream. Exposure has been associated with cardiovascular and respiratory effects.
Why are seniors particularly susceptible?
Aging is commonly accompanied by declining lung function and a higher prevalence of conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Older adults may therefore have less physiological reserve to compensate for the inflammation and cardiovascular stress associated with particulate pollution.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the combined effects of ambient and household air pollution are associated with approximately 6.7 million premature deaths annually worldwide.
Reducing indoor particle sources, using kitchen exhaust ventilation, avoiding indoor smoking and unnecessary combustion, and using appropriate particle filtration can help reduce exposure.
2. Inadequate Ventilation: Pollutants Can Accumulate Where Seniors Spend the Most Time

In poorly ventilated spaces, contaminants can accumulate—particularly in bedrooms and living areas occupied for long periods.

The issue is partly about duration of exposure. Retired adults and seniors with reduced mobility may spend substantially more time at home than younger adults who regularly leave for work, school, or other activities.
Older adults may also be less able to respond quickly to uncomfortable environmental conditions by opening windows, adjusting ventilation systems, or leaving a polluted environment. Those receiving home care may depend on others to recognize and correct ventilation problems.
Good ventilation, however, must be managed carefully. Opening windows during wildfire smoke, extreme heat, or periods of high outdoor pollution can make indoor conditions worse. A balanced strategy combining source control, appropriate ventilation, and filtration is generally more effective.
3. Humidity, Dampness, and Mold: Greater Concern for Sensitive Respiratory Systems

Exposure can cause headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, confusion, loss of consciousness, and, at sufficiently high concentrations, death.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted by many common products, including paints, adhesives, cleaning agents, air fresheners, pesticides, furniture, flooring, and renovation materials.
Health effects vary considerably depending on the chemical, concentration, and duration of exposure. Some VOCs can cause eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or other symptoms, while certain compounds are associated with more serious effects after sufficient exposure.

A Healthy Home Is an Important Part of Healthy Aging
Indoor air quality deserves greater attention in discussions about aging.
Seniors can face a unique combination of risk factors: age-related changes in lung, cardiovascular, immune, and thermoregulatory function; a higher prevalence of chronic diseases; potentially longer periods spent indoors; reduced mobility; and decades of cumulative exposure to certain environmental hazards.
The most important priorities include controlling PM2.5 and combustion pollution, maintaining adequate ventilation, controlling humidity and moisture, testing for radon, preventing carbon monoxide exposure, reducing unnecessary chemical pollutants, and properly maintaining HVAC and filtration systems.
It is also important to recognize that no single product provides complete protection.
An air purifier may reduce particles but will not solve a radon problem. Opening windows may improve ventilation on a pleasant day but could increase exposure during wildfire smoke or severe outdoor pollution. A new HVAC filter cannot correct hidden mold caused by a plumbing leak.
The best approach is therefore comprehensive:
Control pollution at its source. Ventilate appropriately. Filter particles effectively. Control moisture. Test for invisible hazards such as radon. Install carbon monoxide alarms. Maintain building systems properly.
For seniors who wish to age safely and comfortably at home, creating a healthier indoor environment can be an important part of supporting long-term health, independence, and quality of life.
